BACO 1984

History

  • The BACO facility was founded by Prof. Joe Prospero in 1966. The facility has been used to document the transport of Saharan dust particles across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean. Saharan dust particles are collected daily on filters from a 17 m atmospheric tower and analyzed in a clean laboratory.
  • The facility is currently run by Prof. Cassandra Gaston.
  • The transport of African dust to the Caribbean has been documented for over 50 years at BACO resulting in numerous publications and research endeavors.
  • Today, the facility is still used by UM and collaborators to explore the impact of dust on clouds, climate, and air quality.
